Our Half-Day Outpatient Treatment Program, commonly known as an intensive outpatient program (IOP), offers structured clinical support while giving clients greater flexibility and independence. The program combines evidence-based therapies, individual counseling, and recovery-focused activities led by master’s-level clinicians in a supportive and encouraging peer environment. It is designed for individuals who need ongoing support for moderate to severe mental health or substance use challenges while continuing to manage responsibilities outside of treatment.

Half-Day Treatment Weekday Schedule

Half-Day Treatment participants generally attend programming three to five days per week. While clients follow a consistent treatment structure, their schedule and level of care can be adjusted based on their individual goals, progress, and clinical needs. Lunch is provided daily when attending daytime programming.

Sample Day Schedule:

Sample Night Schedule:

  • 05:30 pm – Check-In & Goal Setting
  • 06:30 pm – Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • 07:30 pm – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • 09:00 pm – Check-Out

Each client also participates in one individual therapy session per week.

Many clients initially participate in treatment five days per week before gradually reducing their attendance to a minimum of three days as they make progress and demonstrate greater independence. The schedules above are examples of what a typical treatment day may look like, but each client’s plan is customized according to their needs and recovery goals.

Clinical Services

At our Arlington Heights outpatient programs, we understand that recovery and mental health treatment can present different challenges at every stage. Our clinical services provide clients with therapeutic guidance, practical tools, and ongoing support to help them manage those challenges and build a stronger foundation for continued progress.

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): For individuals experiencing substance use challenges, managing cravings can be an important part of recovery. When clinically appropriate, medication-assisted treatment can combine appropriate medications with behavioral health therapy to help reduce cravings, support stability, and improve engagement in treatment. MAT may be incorporated into an individualized treatment plan alongside counseling and other evidence-based services.
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps clients explore the relationship between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through this approach, individuals can identify unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and practice behavioral changes that support emotional well-being, recovery, and relapse prevention.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT provides practical skills for managing difficult emotions, stress, triggers, and behaviors that may interfere with recovery. Clients can learn strategies related to emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and healthier responses to challenging situations.
  • Group Therapy: Group therapy gives clients a chance to connect with peers who may have faced similar mental health or substance use challenges. Through guided discussions and shared experiences, participants can develop coping skills, strengthen accountability, and receive encouragement from others. Group treatment can also help reduce feelings of isolation and create a greater sense of community throughout the recovery process.

What Happens After Half-Day Treatment (IOP)?

After completing the Half-Day Outpatient Treatment Program, clients may transition into our Aftercare Planning services for continued support. Aftercare can help individuals maintain the progress they made during treatment while adjusting to greater independence and everyday responsibilities.

Aftercare may include:

  • Weekly individual therapy sessions
  • Full-day group therapy sessions

These continued services give clients opportunities to reinforce the skills they developed in treatment, address new challenges, and maintain consistency in their recovery and overall wellness.

Pioneer Behavioral Health also offers Alumni Programs that allow former clients to remain connected to a supportive recovery community. Alumni services can provide ongoing peer connection, sober social activities, and opportunities to stay engaged with others who understand the recovery process. Together, Aftercare and Alumni services can help reinforce the strategies and skills developed during treatment.
