Our Half-Day Outpatient Treatment Program, also known as an intensive outpatient program (IOP), provides structured, therapeutic support while giving clients the flexibility to maintain a higher level of independence. This program blends evidence-based therapies, individual counseling, and recovery-focused activities led by master’s-level clinicians—all within a supportive peer environment. It is best suited for individuals managing moderate to severe mental health challenges.
Half-Day Treatment Weekday Schedule
Half-Day participants typically attend treatment three-to-five days a week. While the structure is consistent, the program can be tailored to meet each client’s unique needs. Lunch is provided daily.
Sample Day Schedule:
- 09:00 am – Check-In & Goal Setting
- 09:30 am – Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- 10:45 am – Group Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- 12:30 pm – Check-Out
Sample Night Schedule:
- 05:30 pm – Check-In & Goal Setting
- 06:30 pm – Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- 07:30 pm – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- 09:00 pm – Check-Out
In addition, each client participates in one individual therapy session per week.
Most clients begin attending five days per week, gradually tapering down to a minimum of three days as progress is made. While the sample schedule above is typical, treatment is always tailored to meet each client’s individual needs.
Clinical Services
At our outpatient treatment programs, we recognize that recovery can involve a variety of obstacles along the way. Our comprehensive clinical services are designed to help clients work through these challenges while providing the support, guidance, and practical resources needed to build a stronger foundation for lasting recovery. Here’s how our programs can support you:
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): Managing cravings and urges can be a key part of overcoming addiction. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines appropriate medications with behavioral health therapy to help reduce cravings, promote greater stability, and support continued participation in treatment. When clinically appropriate, MAT may be included as part of an individualized addiction treatment plan along with counseling and other evidence-based services.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps individuals identify the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that may play a role in substance use. Through CBT, clients learn how to recognize and challenge unhealthy thinking patterns, strengthen coping skills, and develop healthier behaviors that can support long-term recovery and relapse prevention.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Dialectical behavior therapy gives clients practical tools for managing emotional triggers, stress, and behaviors that may contribute to substance use. DBT emphasizes emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and healthier ways of responding to difficult situations. Developing these skills can help individuals navigate recovery challenges and maintain steady progress.
- Group Therapy: Group therapy creates a supportive environment where clients can connect with others who have experienced similar challenges with addiction and recovery. Through structured conversations, shared experiences, and peer support, individuals can strengthen coping skills, develop accountability, and receive encouragement throughout treatment. Group therapy can also help combat isolation and foster a greater sense of connection and community during the recovery process.
After Half-Day Treatment (IOP)
When clients complete the Half-Day Outpatient Treatment Program, they are encouraged to join our Aftercare Planning services. Aftercare includes:
- Weekly individual therapy sessions
- Full-day group therapy sessions
These services help clients strengthen recovery skills, address challenges encountered during increased independence, and maintain consistency in their wellness journey.
Additionally, Pioneer Behavioral Health offers Alumni Programs, which provide continued peer support, sober events, and opportunities to stay engaged in recovery. Both Aftercare and Alumni programs reinforce the tools and strategies developed during treatment.

Half-Day Treatment (IOP) FAQ
At Pioneer Behavioral Health, Half-Day Treatment (IOP) is a structured outpatient program commonly known as an intensive outpatient program (IOP). It provides meaningful therapeutic support for individuals who need more structure than traditional outpatient care while allowing them to maintain greater independence outside of treatment. Our Half-Day Treatment (IOP) programs are available at our Longmeadow and Oxford, Massachusetts locations.
Half-Day Treatment (IOP) may be appropriate for individuals experiencing moderate to severe mental health challenges or substance use concerns who can safely manage some responsibilities outside of treatment. The program offers consistent clinical support without requiring clients to spend the entire day in treatment. An individualized assessment can help determine whether Half-Day Treatment (IOP) is an appropriate level of care.
Half-Day Treatment (IOP) typically involves treatment three to five days per week, with the schedule adjusted as clients make progress. A sample daytime schedule may include check-in and goal setting, group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), group dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and check-out. Evening programming may also be available, with sessions focused on DBT and CBT. Clients also participate in one individual therapy session each week.
Our Half-Day Treatment (IOP) program combines structured therapeutic programming with individualized support. Services may include evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT, group therapy, individual therapy, psychoeducation, and other clinical services based on each client's treatment needs. The program is designed to help clients build coping skills and address mental health or addiction challenges while maintaining greater independence.
Half-Day Treatment (IOP) provides a shorter, more flexible treatment schedule than Full-Day Treatment (PHP). While Full-Day Treatment (PHP) is designed for individuals who need a higher level of structured outpatient support, Half-Day Treatment (IOP) allows clients to spend more time outside of treatment while still participating in regular therapeutic programming. The appropriate level of care depends on each individual's clinical needs and progress.
After completing Half-Day Treatment (IOP), clients are encouraged to continue building on the skills developed during treatment through ongoing support. Pioneer Behavioral Health offers Aftercare services that can include weekly individual therapy and full-day group therapy. Clients may also participate in the Alumni Program, which provides continued peer support and opportunities to remain connected to the recovery community.
