What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that helps individuals better understand and manage intense emotions while building healthier ways to cope with life’s challenges. DBT combines acceptance-based techniques with practical skills that encourage positive behavioral change. At Pioneer Behavioral Health, our team tailors DBT to each person’s unique needs, helping clients strengthen emotional resilience, improve relationships, and work toward lasting mental wellness.

What Conditions Can DBT Help Treat?

DBT was originally developed to treat individuals who experience significant emotional dysregulation, but it has since become an effective treatment option for a variety of mental health conditions.

Dialectical behavior therapy may be recommended for individuals living with borderline personality disorder (BPD), depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, substance use disorders, and other conditions that involve difficulty managing emotions, behaviors, or interpersonal relationships.

Could DBT Be the Right Therapy for You?

DBT may be a good fit if you are looking for practical tools to better manage emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, and improve your quality of life. You may benefit from DBT if you:

  • Frequently experience intense or rapidly changing emotions.
  • Have difficulty managing impulsive behaviors or maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Want to strengthen emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills.
  • Prefer a structured, skills-based approach to therapy with practical techniques you can apply in everyday life.

By teaching mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, DBT helps individuals develop healthier coping strategies and create lasting positive change.

To learn more about dialectical behavior therapy or our outpatient treatment programs, contact Pioneer Behavioral Health today at 844-609-3018. Our team is available to answer your questions and help you determine whether DBT is the right treatment option for your needs.

My experience with this practice has been truly life-changing. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed, heard, and supported in a compassionate and judgment-free environment. The guidance, expertise, and genuine care I received throughout my mental health journey helped me gain valuable insight, build resilience, and develop meaningful tools for personal growth. What stood out most was the team's commitment to creating a safe space where healing and self-discovery could take place. Every interaction reflected professionalism, empathy, and a sincere dedication to helping clients achieve their goals. This journey has been both enlightening and empowering, providing me with a greater understanding of myself and a renewed sense of confidence and well-being. Pioneer provides excellent care for people struggling with substance abuse and mental health. The staff truly care about your recovery and wellbeing and strive for a comprehensive treatment. There is a sense of community and commonality in all the groups. Pioneer has been an essential part of treatment being a step down from residential treatment, still providing a nurturing environment to continue to grow and reintegrate into everyday life

I joined this program at a point in my life where I felt everything was out of control, I had no future, I had recently been dealing with a divorce and the loss of the life I knew with the pet family we created. Having that torn down I knew I needed to take a step to take care of myself. This program has allowed me to become in touch with myself again. Learn to live, by myself. Codependency was a crutch for me and learning about all of this has educated me to make better choices, and sit and really challenge my thoughts. Mid way through the program I lost someone I loved to suicide. Thankfully I was in the program and they gave me the space I needed to process for a few days and jumped back in. The team even helped me file an extension with PFMLA and work to ensure when I have returned I am the best version of myself going back. Met many great people and they have a great caring staff. Not to mention DOWN TO EARTH.

The staff is absolutely amazing! I felt like I belonged immediately. It's a small group, but the best I've ever experienced. I'm going to be so sad when it comes to an end, as I will miss everyone, but confident I learned the proper tools I needed to be my best self.

I’m still currently attending Pioneer Behavioral Health part-time three days a week, so I’m writing this while I’m still in the program. The whole team has been so supportive, kind and genuinely invested in helping me. I’ve already been able to see real changes in my life and in the way I handle things, and I feel more positive than I have in a long time about my ability to actually make lasting changes. I’m really grateful I found this program and for everyone who has been part of my journey so far. I was so nervous at first to participate in a group setting, but this experience has been life-changing. ❤️

My experience at Pioneer has been incredibly helpful and life-changing. When I first started, I was struggling in ways that made it difficult to manage my emotions, relationships, and everyday life. The program gave me a safe and supportive environment where I could be honest about what I was going through without feeling judged. The staff genuinely cares about my progress and helped me learn valuable tools that I can continue using after completing the program. Through therapy, group sessions, and learning different coping skills, I gained a better understanding of myself and learned healthier ways to cope in difficult situations.
